After a short introduction to the man who
is widely considered to be the Godfather of Toasting
("Reggae Rapping"), we are shown a
couple of tracks from a great performance
back in 1978 in the wonderfull countryside
of Jamaica.
Kind
of interesting, since U Roy mostly toasted
over pre-recorded material, like all
toasters do. They are the MC's at the Sound
Systems and they chant over DUB tracks.
Another interesting thing to watch is the
use of both singers and the DJ who toasts.
This concept is now widely used, but
originated in Jamaica in the 1960's
allready.
The
sound quality of the video isn't bad, even
though sometimes there's some resonance due
to the microphones. It's part of a live
concert, and open air concerts are kind of
difficult for sound engineers.
We're shown two tracks from this
particular concert. A remarkable lively U
Roy knows how to capture his audience, while
the band plays some Real Authentic Rockers
Reggae. The first track even in true
"Flying Cymbals" style!
