TOASTING

Many people think modern chanting over rhythms originated with Hip Hop and Rap. Not so. It started in Jamaica, where U Roy started to voice over the instrumental versions of his Sound System ("Mobile Dance Hall"). This was called "Toasting" and it became a strong style within all genres of Reggae until the day of today!

In this portal, we apply the word "toasting" mainly of DJ Track released prior to the early 1980's, that is in the days of Rub a Dub as well as Traditional Roots Rockers.

Dillinger at it's finest, riding over King Tubby dubs while chanting about this-and-that. Some tracks also come with a separate DUB version to complete this more than fine set.

With a balance between singers and DJ's, this album (taken from vinyl) features some great vocal works from the mid 70's. Nice detail, many tunes are Burning Spear covers.

With the humor that typifies so many Mad Professor releases, this 1982 produced album is really more than a slice of toast. For toasting is "Reggae Rapping"...

Put on this album and hear some Rub a Dub toasting or MC-ing at it's best. The mixing is kind of versatile. Some tunes sound like an instrumental version, but most contain some nice startegically placed FX.
